چکیده

Background: Urolithiasis is the third most common urological disease with prevalence of 11% and recurrence rate of 50% and has a great impact on the economsically active population, representing significant health care cost burden. Crystal aggregation and retention are critical events for the formation of kidney stones. There is a close association between crystal development and free radical activity in vivo. Materials and Methods: In the present study 50 subjects presenting with urolithiasis were included. Serum levels of malondialdehyde, vitamin E and βcarotene were measured. These findings were compared with 50 age and sex matched control subjects. Unpaired‘t’ test was applied for statistical analysis. Results: There was a significant increase in MDA (p<0.001) and significant decrease in Vitamin E (p<0.01) and β-Carotene (p<0.001) levels in patients. There was significant negative correlation MDA and vitamin E and between MDA and β-carotene. Conclusion: It appears that a role of lipid peroxidation and oxidative function exists in the pathogenesis of urolithiasis.

Antioxidant Enzymes and Oxidative Stress in the Erythrocytes of Iron Deficiency Anemic Patients Supplemented with Vitamins

Background: Iron deficiency anemia is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Evidences from epidemiological and clinical studies suggest a possible correlation between antioxidant levels and the anemic disease risk. The present work is to investigate antioxidant levels and lipid peroxidation in anemic patients. Methods: A number of 30 patients (15 males and 15 females) we...

Essentiality of antioxidant vitamins for ruminants in relation to stress and reproduction

The naturally occurring antioxidants: vitamin E, β-carotene and vitamin C are known to ameliorate theoxidative stress generated during various physiological and pathological conditions. The oxidative stress mayoccur at different sites, different times, and by different mechanisms in the animal system. Lower levels ofthe anti-oxidant vitamins are associated with poor fertility and production lev...

Antioxidant Pre-Treatment Reduces the Toxic Effects of Oxalate on Renal Epithelial Cells in a Cell Culture Model of Urolithiasis

Urolithiasis is characterized by the formation and retention of solid crystals within the urinary tract. Kidney stones are mostly composed of calcium oxalate, which predominantly generates free radicals that are toxic to renal tubular cells. The aim of the study is to explore possible effects of antioxidant pre-treatment on inhibition of oxidative stress. Three cell lines were used as in vitro ...

Critical role of GSH in Sulfur Mustard-induced Oxidative Stress and Cytotoxicity in Human Skin Fibroblast Cell Line

In this study the role of glutathione (GSH) in sulfur mustard -induced oxidative stress and cytotoxicity, in human skin fibroblast cell line (HF2FF) was evaluated. Sulfur mustard-induced superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide formation were evaluated by determination of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity in cell lysate. The cytotoxicity of sulfur mustard was estimated by lactate dehyd...
